United International University issued an urgent notice on Saturday after reviewing the appeal applications of students who had been permanently expelled.

The decision comes following protests from students of UIU who blocked a road in the Natun Bazar area of Vatara in Dhaka on Saturday morning, protesting the expulsion of students and demanding administrative action against the “arbitrary” authorities.

The notice goes on to state that some of the students’ expulsion statuses had been changed to “suspended expulsion”, while others were given suspensions for two trimesters, after which they will be allowed to resume classes.

Earlier, students barricaded the road from Kuril Biswa road to Badda at around 8am, suspending the vehicular movement on one side of the road. The agitated students had alleged that the students were expelled without any prior discussion or explanation.

They will continue the protest until a full investigation is carried out and administrative action is taken against those responsible.
