Two young men were beaten to death in separate incidents in Jaflong of Sylhet and Sirajganj on Tuesday.
In Jaflong, a young man named Imam Uddin, 38, was beaten to death at a tea garden located in the Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet. The police recovered his body from a room in the garden at 3 pm on Tuesday. It is alleged that Imam was detained and assaulted on Monday night before the murder.
Imam, son of Hormuz Ali from Medi village, was reportedly beaten by a group of people at a tea garden around 3 am on Monday. After the news spread in the morning, Imam’s relatives and locals gathered at the tea garden. When police arrived to recover the body, they met the angry crowd who obstructed them who refused to let them proceed without the arrest of the culprits. later, the police arrested three suspects: the garden’s assistant manager Kapil Uddin Liton, and workers Niranjan Goyala and Akkel Pradhan.
Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Tofail Ahmed said that the murder might have been motivated by multiple reasons, including suspicions of theft or a potential issue related to a woman. Police are continuing their investigation. Imam’s body showed signs of injury on his head and other parts. No case has been filed yet.
Meanwhile, in Sirajganj, another youth was killed in a mob beating incident under suspicion of cattle theft. The body of Bablu Mia, 37, from the Kalai Haripur Union of Sirajganj, was found near the Jamuna River’s western bank in the Banshbaria area on Tuesday afternoon. Bablu had been implicated in multiple theft and robbery cases in Sirajganj and Tangail.
Sirajganj’s Naria Police Station OC Rofiqul Islam confirmed that the body had been sent for post-mortem at Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital.
Earlier on Sunday night, two other alleged thieves, Abdul Rajjak from Paikpara village and Rasheedul Islam from Beripatal in Tangail, were also found dead following a mob beating.
The police later discovered three stolen cows being transported by a group of thieves from Sirajganj to Tangail, which led to a chase and the eventual beating of the thieves.
OC Rofiqul Islam speculated that Bablu Mia may have drowned after jumping into the river during the chase, as he could not swim. The police have filed a case against 150 unknown persons in connection with the deaths. Further investigation is ongoing to uncover any possible additional motives behind the incidents.
