Two young friends from Eidgaon upazila in Cox’s Bazar have died in a tragic motorcycle accident on the Cox’s Bazar–Chattogram highway in Chunati area of Lohagara upazila.

The accident occurred around 11:00pm on Thursday in front of the Jangalia Forest Range office.

The deceased were identified as Rakibul Islam, son of Abdu Shukkur from Jagirpara in Eidgaon Sadar union, and Jihad, son of Shamsul Islam from Kalirchhara in the same union. They were also cousins and shared a close friendship.

Hani Islam, elder brother of Rakibul, told reporters that on Thursday night, six youths set off from Cox’s Bazar on three motorcycles for a trip to Sajek in Khagrachhari. The journey, filled with excitement, turned tragic in an instant when one of the motorcycles lost control in Jangalia, Chunati.

Eyewitness Saiful Islam said, “We, six friends, were heading to Sajek in Rangamati. When we reached Jangalia in Chunati, a Cox’s Bazar-bound pickup collided head-on with a motorcycle, throwing the two riders off. Locals rescued them and took them to a private hospital in the upazila, where doctors declared them dead.”

Locals reported that after hearing of the accident, family members and relatives rushed to the scene. The families of Rakib and Jihad are now in deep mourning.

Aziznagar Police Camp in-charge Ahmed Morshed said the pickup, along with its driver Amir Uddin and helper Zainal Abedin Zobair, had been seized.

Dohazari Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman said the bodies would be handed over to the families after completing legal procedures.
