Three people, including two students, were killed and two others were injured in a tragic collision between a passenger bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Sunamganj-Sylhet highway near Bahadurpur area on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred when a bus heading to Sylhet collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
The two students who died were Afshana Jahan Khushi, a student of Yarn Manufacturing Technology at Sunamganj Textile Institute, and Sneha Chakraborty, a student of Sunamganj University of Science and Technology (SUBI).
Police confirmed that both students died on the spot.
The third fatality has not yet been identified. The driver of the auto-rickshaw, Abdul Rashid, was seriously injured and was initially taken to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.
He was later transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Another passenger, who was also injured, is in critical condition, according to medical sources.
Local police and fire service teams responded quickly to the scene, with rescue operations carried out promptly. Police have speculated that reckless driving might have been the cause of the accident, though an official investigation is underway.
The untimely deaths of the two young students have cast a shadow of grief over the area, and local schools and colleges are observing mourning activities.
