Two people were killed and at least 12 others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-bound lane of the Padma Bridge near the Mawa point Friday night. The incident occurred around 11 pm when a speeding passenger bus collided with the rear of a truck, causing a temporary halt in traffic for nearly one hour and forty-five minutes.

The collision caused chemical materials from the truck to spill onto the road, making the bridge surface dangerously slippery. As a result, authorities suspended traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane to prevent further accidents.

Fire service crews arrived at the scene and worked to clear the roadway. They removed the damaged bus and truck using wreckers and cleaned the chemical spill. Traffic was restored around 12:45 am, easing the severe congestion that had built up during the busy post-Eid return rush. One of the deceased was identified as Rakib Jamaddar, a resident of Khulna. The identity of the other victim was yet to be confirmed as of Saturday morning. The injured were taken to hospitals in Dhaka and nearby areas for treatment.

Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Munshiganj Fire Service, confirmed the incident. He stated that the collision occurred near pillar number 2 of the bridge’s approach ramp when an Imad Paribahan bus bound for Dhaka rammed into a stationary truck. Two units of the fire service took part in the rescue operation.
