Two suspects accused in multiple cases, including the recent attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders in Gopalganj, have been arrested in Pirojpur.
On Monday (28 July), members of the Pirojpur district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal detained the suspects in front of the Pirojpur District and Sessions Judge Court.
The arrestees are Israfil Hossain Israfil, 25, son of the late Raja Sheikh from Patgati area in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj, and Khokon Hossain Samrat, 27, son of the late Yusuf Hossain from Gauhardanga area of the same upazila.
According to police, Israfil is accused in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tungipara Police Station. Samrat is accused in five separate cases, including charges under the Penal Code, Anti-Terrorism Act, and for his alleged involvement in the attack on NCP leaders.
Local sources said that Pirojpur Chhatra Dal president Salauddin Talukder Kumar and several activists noticed the two youths loitering suspiciously near the court premises. Upon checking their mobile phones, they reportedly found images of the attack on NCP leaders and other objectionable content.
The two were immediately handed over to Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, and later in the afternoon, Tungipara police took them into their custody.
Police sources confirmed that both individuals are named accused in several violent incidents under Tungipara Police Station. They were arrested in Pirojpur based on a requisition from Tungipara police.
Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rabiul Islam said that Israfil faces a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, while Samrat is named in five cases involving the Penal Code, Anti-Terrorism Act, and the attack on NCP leaders.
