Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have arrested two individuals linked to the Awami League in connection with Sunday’s attack on Hasnat Abdullah, the chief coordinator (Southern Region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The detainees were identified as Nizamuddin, a local Jubo League leader from Ward 13 of the Gazipur City Corporation, and Masud Ahmed Dipu, president of the Kashimpur Thana unit of Sheikh Russel Shishu Kishore Parishad, according to GMP officials.

“They will be produced before the court, and a remand petition will be submitted,” a GMP spokesperson said.

Hasnat Abdullah was reportedly assaulted by a group of unidentified men in the Chandana area of Gazipur on Sunday evening. The incident was first revealed via a Facebook post by senior NCP leader Abdul Hannan Masud, who called on nearby party members to rush to the scene for Hasnat’s protection.

“Hasnat Abdullah’s car has come under attack in Chandana, Gazipur. Anyone nearby, please come forward immediately,” Masud wrote on his verified Facebook account.

Sarjis Alam, the NCP’s chief coordinator (Northern Region), corroborated the account, stating that 10 to 12 individuals carried out the attack. “The car’s windows were smashed, and Hasnat’s hand was bleeding. Those nearby, please assist,” he posted.

Eyewitnesses later spotted Hasnat near the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), under the jurisdiction of Gacha Police Station. Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Nasir Uddin told reporters he was heading to the location after receiving initial reports.

In response to the incident, the NCP’s Dhaka Metropolitan Committee staged a protest, condemning the attack and demanding swift justice.
