Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam issued a fiery twin-message on Facebook Sunday, calling for a national reckoning on the 1971 war crimes and denouncing pro-Mujib leftists as internal saboteurs.
In a Facebook post titled “Two Words”, Adviser Mahfuj Alam emphasised two critical points. First, he stated: Pakistan committed genocide in this country. While Pakistan has offered apologies and expressed willingness to apologise again, the local accomplices of war crimes have yet to do so. That must change.
“Narratives justifying or excusing genocide must be shut down. Sabotage within the forces of July must be uprooted. Reconciliation demands honesty,” he further warned.
In his second point, the adviser unleashed a sharp critique of pro-Mujib leftists: These leftists are the architects behind enforced disappearances, political killings, and the bloodshed during the anti-Modi and Shapla protests. They belong to the notorious 36 Division.
“They are culturally and intellectually betraying July. The B-teams of the League will be defeated. No one else can be relied on,” Mahfuj Alam alleged that despite their “repugnant role” in July’s upheavals, these actors remain “untouched” and continue to undermine the July Movement from within.
In a prior post, the adviser had confirmed a landmark decision: the banning of all Awami League activities until its leaders and activists are tried by the International Crimes Tribunal. The move was finalised at a special Advisory Council meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
A formal July Declaration is expected within 30 working days.
In regards to reconciliation, Adviser for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Professor Asif Nazrul has informed that a Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be established.
