Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants killed six paramilitary personnel and abducted eight others during an attack on a checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, security officials said on Tuesday.
Dozens of militants stormed a checkpoint in Peshawar city on Monday using firearms, hand grenades and mortar shells.
A security official told AFP on condition of anonymity that the attackers belonged to the TTP, which later claimed responsibility for the assault.
A second security official said six personnel of the Federal Constabulary (FC) were killed in the attack and four others injured.
The FC is Pakistan’s paramilitary force that plays a key role in frontline security in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.
The official also confirmed that the militants abducted eight FC personnel and took them to an undisclosed location.
Pakistan’s military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The TTP later posted an image of the abducted personnel on its social media channel while claiming responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan has been facing a growing wave of insurgent violence in its western border regions with Afghanistan.
Islamabad accuses militants of operating from Afghan territory, an allegation the Afghan Taliban government in Kabul has repeatedly denied.
Last month, militants killed 26 people in multiple attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Tensions between Kabul and Islamabad have worsened in recent months over militancy allegations, leading to diplomatic strain and deadly cross-border clashes, including Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan.
