U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Tuesday to create a White House Olympics task force ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, an administration official confirmed to Reuters.
The task force will include members of Trump’s cabinet and various federal agencies, and is designed to coordinate efforts across federal, state, and local levels — particularly in areas such as transportation and event security.
According to the official, the task force will also work to streamline visa processing and credentialing for international athletes, coaches, officials, and members of the media.
The United States is set to host the Olympics in Los Angeles in three years. Trump, a Republican who lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, has expressed enthusiasm about overseeing the Games during what he calls his second presidential term.
“During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America’s bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement on Monday.
Los Angeles previously hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. Organisers last month unveiled the initial competition schedule for the 2028 Games.
Casey Wasserman, chair and president of the LA28 organising committee, welcomed the move.
“The creation of this task force marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028,” Wasserman said.
