Trawler capsize in Meghna: 3 dead, child still missing as rescue efforts continue

The body of a police constable was recovered on Monday, two days after a trawler carrying 39 passengers capsized in the Meghna River on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Md Saiful Islam, was posted at Hatiya Police Station and hailed from Charshahi village under Chandraganj police station in Lakshmipur. Local residents spotted his body floating near Darbesh Bazar area of the island and alerted authorities.

Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Azmal Huda confirmed the recovery, stating the body had been washed ashore by tidal currents.

According to police reports, 35 passengers have been rescued alive while three have been confirmed dead in the accident. A Rohingya child named Tamim remains missing as search operations continue.

The ill-fated trawler had departed from Bhasan Char for Ali Bazar Ghat in Hiron union, carrying a mixed group of police personnel, Ansar members, Rohingya patients, and NGO workers. The vessel sank approximately 7-8 kilometers into its journey near Dubarchar during stormy weather conditions.
