A reported Tk 5.5 million was looted from a moving private car in broad daylight in Monirampur upazila of Jashore on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred in the Jamtola Donar area on the Rajarhat–Chuknagar regional road.
According to initial reports, Rabiul Islam, area manager for mobile financial service provider Nagad, was transporting the funds from an agent office in Jashore city to the company’s Monirampur branch.
The vehicle, a private car bearing Dhaka Metro-G-15-5923 registration, was being driven by Saju, a staff member of the same agent office.
As they reached the Kuwada Jamtola stretch, two motorcycles intercepted them as one of the bikes swerved in front of the car, forcing it off the road and bringing it to a halt.
At that point, four unidentified men armed with sharp weapons shattered the car’s windows, physically assaulted the occupants, and fled with the bag containing the cash.
The victims immediately alerted authorities via the national emergency helpline 999. Officers from Monirampur Police Station, including its officer-in-charge, responded to the scene.
While attempts to reach OC Babulur Rahman Khan for comment were unsuccessful, a local journalist quoted him as saying, “There are discrepancies about the actual amount looted. We have initiated a thorough investigation, including digital forensics, to determine what happened.”
He added, “If a robbery did take place, we are committed to recovering the stolen funds. Police are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness.”
Nagad’s Monirampur Office Supervisor Abu Sayeed confirmed to several media outlets that the amount stolen was Tk 5.5 million, based on information from senior officials.
As the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made.
