Tk2 lakh, 10 bhori gold looted from addl DIG’s home in Gazipur

A gang of armed robbers looted cash and gold ornaments from the ancestral home of Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Railway Police Abida Sultana in Kaliakair upazila early Saturday.

The incident took place between 3am and 4:30am at the three-storey house in Thengarband village under Madhyapara union.

According to police and locals, around 10–12 masked robbers entered the house by cutting through a window grill. They tied up Abida Sultana’s father, Najmul Alam, and held him and his wife hostage at knifepoint while ransacking the house.

Najmul Alam told reporters, “Around 3am, they cut the grill, broke open the doors, tied us up, and looted around 10 bhori of gold and Tk2 lakh in cash.”

After the robbers fled, the couple called for help, drawing locals to the scene. Police from Kaliakair Police Station arrived shortly after.

Riyad Mahmud, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliakair Police Station, confirmed the robbery, stating, “We rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the information. The matter is under investigation, and legal steps are being taken.”

Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Chowdhury Jabed Sadeque said the incident is being taken seriously. “We have heard that suspicious individuals, claiming to be from a government agency, had visited the house earlier. All angles are being probed,” he said.

Local sources revealed that a group identifying themselves as Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officials had visited the house days before the robbery, raising questions about their motives.

It has also been learned that Additional DIG Abida Sultana is currently on Officer on Special Duty (OSD) status.

Further investigations are ongoing.
