Customs officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka have recovered 8.12 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately Tk12 crore, during a special operation on Thursday morning.
According to a press release issued by Dhaka Customs House, the gold, 70 bars in total, was found abandoned in the cargo section of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-326, which had arrived from Doha, Qatar.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Joint Commissioner Nazmun Nahar Kayser and Assistant Commissioner SM Sarafat Hossain conducted the operation around 9am. The gold bars were discovered hidden in fabric and wrapped in black scotch tape, placed inside the front cargo hold of the aircraft.
Speaking about the operation, Customs Commissioner Muhammad Zakir Hossain stated that Bangladesh Customs remains vigilant against foreign currency smuggling and gold trafficking, in a continued effort to protect the national economy.
He added that the seized gold will be deposited with Bangladesh Bank after completing legal procedures.
