Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has criticized the government for failing to establish expected good governance, curb corruption, and implement an accountable system of rule, despite the potential for positive change following the political upheaval.
These remarks were made during a press conference on Monday at the Midas Centre in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The organization presented a research report titled “One Year After the Government’s Fall: Expectations and Realities.”
In the overall analysis, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman commented that the law-and-order situation in the country remains very weak, though some steps taken by the government in the economic sector were commendable.
He further noted that the growth and influence of religion-based politics are evident, while freedom of information and freedom of expression continue to face significant challenges.
Presenting the findings, TIB’s Shahzada M. Akram said that between the fall of the Hasina regime on August 5, 2024, and June 1, 2025, a total of 1,602 cases were filed nationwide related to attacks and killings of protesters, including 638 murder cases.
According to TIB’s assessment, nearly 70 percent of these cases have seen satisfactory investigative progress, with inquiries nearing completion in 60 to 70 murder cases. However, progress has been significantly weaker in cases involving the police.
Over the past 11 months, 761 cases have been filed against police personnel, implicating 1,168 officers. Yet only 61 have been arrested, and trials at the tribunals have moved at a sluggish pace, TIB said.
The report also revealed that the International Crimes Tribunal has received 429 complaints and initiated 27 cases related to the crackdown. Among the accused are 206 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A total of 73 arrests have been made in connection with these cases.
TIB warned that core accountability institutions remain effectively powerless, undermining efforts to dismantle the culture of impunity. TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman, along with fellows Md Julkarnain and Farhana Rahman, were also present at the briefing.
