A Dhaka court has ordered three suspects who were arrested in the Shahriar Alam Shammo murder case at Dhaka University to be sent to jail. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed issued the order on Wednesday, approving the investigation officer’s plea.

The detained suspects are Md Tamim Howladar (30), Palash Shordar (30), and Shomrat Mollick (28).

Police arrested the trio on Wednesday from Rajabazar and other areas of the capital.

Shammo’s elder brother Shariful Islam filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station naming 10-12 individuals, with these three among those named who were apprehended.

Case details reveal that on Tuesday at around 11pm, Shammo was stabbed during an altercation that began after his motorcycle collided with another near Suhrawardy Udyan. He was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being found bleeding profusely around midnight.

Shammo, the publicity secretary of Sir AF Rahman Hall’s Chhatra Dal unit and a master’s student from the Institute of Education and Research, was buried in his ancestral home in Ullapara, Sirajganj following Wednesday’s noon prayers at DU Central Mosque.

Since his murder, the DU campus has erupted in protests, with Chhatra Dal holding demonstrations demanding justice and campus security. Protesters have called for the resignations of the home adviser, VC, and proctor over “administrative failure.” Similar protests occurred in Sirajganj, Tangail, and Jhalakathi, with further grievances aired on social media.

Meanwhile, DU authorities formed a seven-member probe committee headed by Arts Faculty Dean Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
