A three-member inquiry committee must now be formed before taking disciplinary action against public servants, according to an amendment proposal to the Public Service (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, passed by the advisory council.

As of now, the original Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 – promulgated on May 25 – granted the government power to suspend or demote an accused employee after merely serving two notices in the span of 14 days.

This triggered widespread protests by secretariat employees, prompting the government to reconsider the law.

The clearance of the amendment proposal comes nearly six weeks after the ordinance’s enactment.

The advisory council, headed by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, approved the proposal today during a meeting at his office, after which the Cabinet Division confirmed the matter, with only the matter of its scrutiny remaining to be conducted by the scrutiny by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

However, the full text of the amended law has not yet been officially released.
