Three members of a family, including an eight-year-old boy, suffered burn injuries in an acid attack at Jhikargacha upazila in Jashore on Thursday night.
The attack took place around 8pm at Mathbari village of Gadkhali union, police said.
The victims were identified as Rahela Khatun, 48, wife of Jamat Ali of Mathbari village, their son Yanur, 8, and Jamat’s sister Ripa Khatun, 26. Locals rescued them and took them to the 250-bed General Hospital in Jashore.
Quoting the family, police said Jasim, a domestic worker employed by one Fazlul Haque of nearby Mathpara village, had repeatedly harassed Ripa with unwanted proposals. After she rejected him, Jasim allegedly threw acid through a window of Jamat Ali’s house, burning the three family members.
Hearing their screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and arranged for their hospital admission.
Dr Hasib Al Newaz of Jashore General Hospital said Yanur’s condition is critical, while Ripa and Rahela sustained relatively minor burns and are undergoing treatment in the hospital ward.
Sub-Inspector Zakir of Jhikargacha Police Station confirmed the attack and said a police team, including senior officers, is investigating the case.
