Three individuals were arrested on Sunday at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for attempting to smuggle gold ornaments into Bangladesh. The total weight of the seized gold was 887.50 grams, with an estimated market value of Tk 82.31 lakh.
At 9:20 am, Md. Saleh Faisal, 27, was apprehended near the roundabout between the departure and arrival terminals with 293.50 grams of gold ornaments, valued at Tk 36,10,050.
Shortly after, at 1:45 pm, Monirul Islam, 34, was detained near the media corner of Arrival Terminal No. 2 with 395 grams of gold ornaments worth Tk 46,21,500.
Earlier in the morning, at 10:20 am, Masum Rana, 32, was arrested at Arrival Terminal No. 2 with 199 grams of gold. He was sent to the Executive Magistrate Court for legal proceedings.
The suspects admitted to smuggling the gold into the country by evading customs and using incoming passengers. All three have known affiliations with a gold smuggling syndicate and were acting as receivers.
Two separate cases have been filed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Police Station.
