Thousands gather at Manik Mia Avenue to commemorate first anniversary of July Uprising

Thousands gathered at Manik Mia Avenue on Tuesday morning to mark the first anniversary of the people’s uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government. Despite light rain, people of all ages steadily poured into the avenue by around 11:15am, creating a festive atmosphere filled with determination.

Many carried national flags, some waving them proudly, others wearing them around their heads as symbols of unity and patriotism.

Among the early arrivals was Md Ahmedul Hasan from Mirpur, who came with his sister and young nephew. Speaking to reporters, he explained that they had come to witness the historic occasion and show support for the spirit of the July uprising.

The July Declaration, which will be read out at 5pm, is the focal point of the day’s commemorations. A series of cultural performances, a drone show, and other events are scheduled to continue until midnight. However, there has been a slight delay in the start of the proceedings, which were originally set to begin at 11am.

Rakibul Islam, an attendee from Old Dhaka, shared his thoughts, saying, “I’ve been here since morning to hear the July Declaration. This day marks the sacrifice of the students and the masses for the new Bangladesh. We’re here to honour this day and make it memorable for everyone.” Riyazul Bashar, from Savar, added, “The 36-day-long movement of July led to the fall of the autocratic regime of Hasina, and through that, we got our Independence. Today marks a historic day for the new nation.”

To ensure broad participation, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs arranged eight pairs of trains to bring students and members of the public from across the country to the capital, with return transport available after the event.

In terms of security, Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division, Ibne Mizan, reassured the public, stating, “Comprehensive security measures have been put in place around Manik Mia Avenue.

lidul Haque Howlader, confirmed the installation of high-capacity CCTV cameras along the avenue and the deployment of RAB personnel to ensure safety.

At 5pm, Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus will read the July Declaration at the southern plaza of the National Parliament. The event will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV). Other planned activities include musical performances, a “Fascist Escape” celebration at 2:25pm, a drone show at 7:30pm, and a performance by the popular band Artcell at 8pm.

Considering the massive crowd expected, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced that vehicular movement will be restricted on the road in front of the National Parliament Building and Manik Mia Avenue throughout the day.
