Police in Moulvibazar’s Juri upazila recovered the bodies of a tea worker couple on Saturday morning in what is believed to be a case of suicide.
The deceased have been identified as Dilip Banerjee (47) and his wife Sari Banerjee (38), residents of the Elbintila tea garden area under Fultala Union.
According to local sources, their younger son, Liton, discovered the bodies after waking up in the morning. He found his mother lying unresponsive on the floor inside their home and his father collapsed on the road just outside.
After alerting neighbors, it was confirmed that both had died. Police were informed and later recovered the bodies from the scene.
The couple had three children. Their eldest son works in Dhaka, their daughter lives with relatives, while Liton lived with them in the tea garden quarters.
Local tea worker leader Hargobinda Goswami stated that the family had dinner as usual on Friday night and went to sleep without any signs of dispute or distress.
Juri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Morshedul Alam Bhuiyan said, “Initial evidence suggests that the couple may have consumed poison. An empty pesticide bottle was found outside their home, and there was a strong odor from their mouths.”
He added that further investigations and autopsies are underway to confirm the cause of death.
