BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday expressed hope that Bangladesh would witness its most credible national election soon under Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’ interim government.

Virtually addressing a discussion marking National People’s Party’s (NPP) 18th founding anniversary at IDEB, Tarique stated: “We expect the people will immediately see the freest, most impartial election in our history under this internationally acclaimed interim government’s leadership.”

He revealed political parties have reiterated their demand for specific election timelines during recent meetings with the Chief Adviser. “BNP insists elections must be held by December,” he emphasised.

The BNP leader warned: “Defeated autocrats await opportunities to resurface through electoral delays,” while asserting that united democratic forces could prevent fascism’s return.

Highlighting ongoing public unrest, Tarique noted: “Citizens across professions are protesting daily, yet their demands remain unheard.” He criticized the former Awami League government’s “fascist suppression” of opposition parties.

Tarique stressed the need for political empowerment, stating: “Only an elected government can truly empower citizens and prevent autocracy.”

He also opposed the NBR restructuring ahead of budget, warning it could harm revenue collection and economic stability.
