BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has strongly criticised the government’s alleged role in protecting those responsible for recent acts of violence, questioning why the authorities continue to tolerate such misconduct while the BNP has taken a firm stance against it.
Speaking during a virtual address at a party event, Tarique said, “We have always told the government — no injustice, from any quarter, will be tolerated. Then why is the government silent? Why is it providing shelter? Why hasn’t the person we all saw killing someone on screen yesterday been arrested yet?”
Referring to the recent killing of a Jubo Dal activist, he added, “Another murder occurred just two days ago. Why is there silence on this? Why is it, when we demand justice, we are accused of doing politics with dead bodies?”
Tarique further stated that the BNP and its affiliated bodies have already made their positions clear — those responsible for any form of wrongdoing must be brought to justice under existing laws, regardless of their political affiliation.
“A wrongdoer can never be protected under any party identity,” he said.
He also echoed the concerns raised by the father of a slain BNP activist present at the event, emphasising that these questions now belong to the nation.
“Why is justice delayed for our martyrs? Who is trying to obstruct the path to justice by manipulating public opinion? These are not just questions from one family — they are now the people’s questions.”
Tarique warned that a “hidden enemy” is becoming increasingly visible and accused certain quarters of deliberately trying to destabilise the country’s democratic environment.
“These answers are tied to the very existence of the country and its people,” he said, urging supporters to raise their voices and demand accountability.
He concluded by calling on the nation to recognise those who have historically stood for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and those who have not, saying that this distinction must be made clearly and firmly in the current political landscape.
