Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, has strongly stated that no election other than one conducted under a proportional representation (PR) system will be accepted.

Speaking at a rally on Tuesday morning near the TV Hospital area in Mohakhali, Dhaka, Taher urged political leaders who do not understand the PR system to join a “class” on the subject.

The rally, organised by Jamaat’s Dhaka North City unit, was held to mark the first anniversary of the July mass uprising.

Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Taher pointed at the BNP, saying, “Some leaders of a major party say they do not understand the PR method. I am offering to hold a class for them if needed. You can say many things, make promises, but people no longer trust words that have no reflection in action.”

He further added, “Those unwilling to give the PR method legal backing are hiding something. You cannot claim to accept a policy but then refuse to institutionalise it.”

Taher assured that if Jamaat comes to power, all citizens, including women, will feel secure under their governance. “As per the declaration of our party’s Ameer, no Jamaat MP will accept duty-free cars or government plots,” he said. “Let the people of this country give us a chance to serve them, just once.”

Following the rally, a procession was brought out through the streets.
