Mosammat Sumaiya, popularly known as Sumaiya Shikdar, has announced her candidacy in the upcoming Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election.

A Marketing Department student, she is contesting for the post of secretary for female students’ welfare from the “Boichitryer Oikko” panel. In a Facebook post, she expressed her satisfaction that CUCSU elections are being held after a gap of 36 years.

Sumaiya pointed to her record of campus activism, recalling her participation in movements for establishing a Fine Arts Faculty, protests following the shuttle train accident, demonstrations against harassment of female students, solidarity campaigns for Palestine, and active involvement in the July uprising. She said she also served as coordinator for Chattogram district and CU during the July movement but resigned in protest after what she described as misuse of the title.

She added that her efforts continued after the uprising, speaking out for a safe and student-friendly campus. According to her, nine female students of Bijoy-24 Hall, including herself, were expelled in violation of rules.

“Despite immense mental pressure, I raised my voice for myself and those expelled. In the end, I won a legal battle in the High Court,” she wrote.
