Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN), a civil society platform working for good governance, formally handed over a copy of its proposed “National Charter” to the National Consensus Commission (NCC) on Monday.
SHUJAN’s Central Coordinator, Dilip Kumar Sarkar, presented the document to NCC Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz at the commission’s office in the National Parliament complex. Commission member Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider were also present.
Professor Riaz thanked SHUJAN for drafting the charter and remarked that the document would contribute to the ongoing formulation of the July Charter. NCC confirmed the development in a press release issued later in the day.
SHUJAN representatives explained that their efforts began in 2013 with the aim of building political consensus on fundamental national issues.
In 2023, the organisation held eight divisional workshops and a national civic dialogue, engaging political parties and civil society members to refine their proposals.
To broaden public input, SHUJAN organised 15 dialogue sessions across the country and incorporated recommendations from various interim reform commission proposals. A public opinion survey conducted in May and June this year, with responses from 1,373 participants, helped shape the final version of the charter.
Based on citizen feedback from the dialogues and survey, SHUJAN finalised the charter, which was handed over to the commission as part of its larger plan to present it to the interim government.
Secretary of SHUJAN’s Dhaka Metropolitan Committee and Member Secretary of the Divisional Coordination Committee Zubairul Haque Nahid, Secretary of the Dhaka District Committee Mahbul Alam, Central Associate Coordinator Zillur Rahman, and Women and Children Affairs Secretary of the Dhaka District Committee Mushtari Begum were present during the handover ceremony.
