Police have submitted a chargesheet against top-listed criminal Subrata Bain alias Md. Fateh Ali (61), and three of his associates in an arms case filed with the Hatirjheel Police Station in Dhaka.
The three co-accused are Abu Rasel Masud alias Molla Masud, MAS Sharif, and Arafat Ibn Nasir.
The chargesheet, filed by Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Aminul Islam, was presented on Sunday before Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman. Upon reviewing the chargesheet, the magistrate signed it and transferred the case to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court for trial.
According to the case documents, Subrata Bain re-entered Bangladesh after August 5 and became actively involved once again in murder, extortion, and other organized criminal activities. He is accused of rebuilding his terror network and coordinating operations with his long-time collaborators.
Subrata Bain and his close aide Molla Masud were arrested in a special operation led by the Bangladesh Army in Kushtia in the early hours of May 27. Based on information extracted from the duo, DB later arrested two more associates, shooter Arafat and Sharif, from Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area.
During the raid, law enforcement officers recovered a cache of illegal weapons and devices, including five foreign pistols, 10 magazines, 53 rounds of ammunition, and a satellite phone.
A case under the Arms Act was filed the next day, May 28, by SI Asaduzzaman of Hatirjheel Police Station.
Subrata Bain was one of 23 most-wanted criminals named by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2001, with bounties announced for their capture. He was known for leading the “Seven Star Group”, a notorious crime syndicate, and was involved in killings, robberies, and armed violence that destabilized the country during that period. He later fled to India and remained at large for years.
The charges also allege that after his recent return to Bangladesh, Bain resumed his criminal operations and held regular meetings at a residence in Hatirjheel belonging to co-accused Sharif.
Weapons, ammunition, and other materials used in organized crime were reportedly stored at the location.
On the same day, May 27, at around 3pm, police arrested MAS Sharif and Arafat Ibn Nasir from the Natun Rasta area of Hatirjheel.
All four accused now face trial under the country’s arms control legislation, with the case scheduled for further proceedings at the Sessions Court.
