Students, staff collide after hospital employees stage simultaneous protest in Barishal

Doctors, nurses, and employees of Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (BBMCH) staged a demonstration and a protest rally on campus in Barishal city on Thursday, demanding security in their workplace.

However, the protesters threatened to launch a non-stop strike if the hospital authorities failed to ensure a healthy environment on the campus.

The hospital authorities have alleged that overall working atmosphere have become chaotic in the public hospital due to students launched a hunger strike on the campus, demanding reforms in the healthcare sector.

However, simultaneously protests eventually led to a clash between the two groups, with one of the leaders of the movement, Mohiuddin Rony, alleging that hospital staff attacked the protesting students, leaving several students injured.

On the other hand, the protesting staff of the hospital told journalists that, over the past 18 days, they have been facing various forms of harassment from students.

Shortly after the rally, a clash broke out between the hospital staff and students. Additional policemen were deployed on the hospital campus.

Director of the hospital Brigadier General Dr AKM Moshihul Munir urged both sides to remain calm, claiming that hospital staff have been working in fear.

Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Bellal Hossain stated that tensions arose between the protesting students and hospital staff, leading to a few isolated clashes.
