Students protest at DU VC’s residence demanding JCD committee suspensions

Dhaka university students staged a midnight protest in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) residence, demanding the suspension of JCD student wing committees and the expulsion of recently appointed members.

The demonstrators, including female students from multiple halls, marched across the campus before gathering at the VC’s house.

The protest began around 12:30 AM on Friday when students from Muhsin Hall marched through Masterda Surya Sen Hall and circled the campus before heading to Raju Sculpture. During the rally, female students from Rokeya and Shamsun Nahar Hall broke gate locks to join the demonstration.

Protesters chanted slogans such as: “July’s blood will not go in vain,” “One two three four—no more hall politics,” “Direct action against guest rooms,” “Direct action against common rooms,” and “No more politics in halls.”

Earlier, students from Rokeya Hall, Sufia Kamal Hall, and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall submitted memorandum to their respective provosts.

Asiya Remiza, a protester from Rokeya Hall, said, “We warned hall administrations to take action, but they failed. That’s why we’ve come to the VC.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has confirmed that the DU policy of establishing a politics-free university dormitories remains valid.

The VC made this announcement around 3 AM on Saturday following student protests against the annoucement of jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal committees in 18 residential halls.
