Students of Rabindra University in Sirajganj blocked the Jamuna bridge toll plaza on Thursday morning, demanding immediate approval of a long-delayed Development Project Proposal (DPP) for their permanent campus in Shahjadpur.
The blockade began around 11.50am when demonstrators placed barricades at the toll plaza intersection, halting road communication between Dhaka and the northern districts.
Jamuna Bridge West Zone Police Station officer-in-charge Asaduzzaman said vehicular movement through the bridge came to a standstill, creating long tailbacks on both sides. He said police were working to restore traffic flow.
The protest came a day after students staged a six-hour railway blockade over the same demand. They said the university, established nine years ago, still lacks a permanent facility, and they would continue demonstrations until the DPP is approved and implemented.
The protesters warned that the government must take responsibility for any public inconvenience caused by the movement.
On 26 July, students, teachers and staff boycotted Rabindra University Day celebrations over the issue.
In recent weeks, agitation has included highway blockades, symbolic classes, street performances, protest songs and human chains.
