Student leader Apu put on 4-day remand in extortion case

A court has put Jane Alam Apu, expelled joint convener of Bangladesh Students’ Union’s central committee, on a 4-day remand in connection with an extortion case involving former MP Shammi Ahmed’s Gulshan residence.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter issued the remand order on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Apu was brought to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in a white private car and placed in custody. He was later produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter’s court.

The investigating officer of the case, Mokhlesur Rahman (Investigation Inspector of Gulshan Police Station), sought a 10-day remand for the accused. Meanwhile, Apu’s defence lawyer applied for bail.

The prosecution strongly demanded the remand. After hearing both sides, the court granted a 4-day remand.

Notably, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Apu from Wari area of the capital on Friday in connection with the extortion case.
