Stocks decline at week’s end

The stock market closed in the red on Thursday, with the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange edging down by 17.34 points, or 0.31 percent from the day before, to close at about 5,614 points.

Other indices followed suit, with the blue-chip DS30 index dropping 0.60 percent to 2,183 points and the Shariah-based DSES index falling 0.29 percent to 1,230 points.

Besides, CDSET, an index for tracking the performance of large-cap stocks, declined 0.90 percent to 1,134 points.

Most large-cap sectors saw negative performances, with the telecommunication sector posting the highest loss of 1.62 percent. The banking sector followed with a 1.30 percent decline.

The engineering, fuel and power, food and allied, and pharmaceutical sectors also experienced losses of 0.96 percent, 0.69 percent, 0.29 percent, and 0.20 percent, respectively. However, the non-banking financial institution sector saw a gain of 1.83 percent.

Daily turnover, a key indicator of investor activity, declined by 4.22 percent from its value the previous day to about Tk 1,339 crore.

Block trades contributed 2.5 percent to the overall market turnover. The most traded share of the day was City Bank Ltd, which saw a turnover of Tk 463 million, with a 1.1 percent decline in its share price.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange also closed in red, with its All-Share price index slumping by 0.18 percent from the day before to reach 15,702 points.
