A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against actress, filmmaker, and singer Meher Afroz Shaon based on a case filed by her stepmother Nishi Islam.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah on Wednesday also issued arrest warrants against nine others, including former chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of police Harun-or-Rashid and former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Nazmul.
According to the case details, on 21 February 2024, engineer Mohammad Ali married Nishi Islam under Islamic law, setting a dowry (denmohor) of Tk 5 million.
Later, the plaintiff discovered that Ali was already married and had concealed the existence of his first wife and children. A family dispute ensued, during which the plaintiff claims she was subjected to threats, physical abuse, and intimidation on multiple occasions in February and March.
The complaint also alleges that Shaon’s brother, Mahin Afroz Shinjon, her husband Sabbir, and several police officials attacked the plaintiff’s residence and attempted to force her to sign a blank sheet of paper.
Additionally, incidents of physical assault on the plaintiff are reported on 5 March and 24 March, including claims of torture at the DB office. During this period, a drug case was also reportedly filed against the plaintiff.
Out of the 12 accused, two police officers have surrendered and been granted bail. However, arrest warrants remain active for the others.
