Police have arrested a man in Lalmonirhat for allegedly attempting to kill his six-year-old stepson by throwing him into a pond in Kurigram on Saturday night.
The accused, Murad Hossain, reportedly took the boy, Md Tasin, on a day-long motorcycle trip before pushing him into a roadside pond around 9:30pm in Chhararpar area of Shimulbari Union under Fulbari Upazila.
Local resident Azipur Islam of Fakirpara village, who was returning home from the market, noticed the child struggling in the water when the headlights of an auto-rickshaw illuminated the pond.
“I immediately pulled him out,” Azipur said.
Azipur took the boy to his home before police from Fulbari Police Station arrived at around 10:30pm and took Tasin into custody.
Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahim of Fulbari Police Station confirmed that Lalmonirhat police arrested Murad Hossain later that night.
Tasin is the son of the late Tara Mia from Shokher Bazar in Lalmonirhat. After his father’s death, he lived with his elder brother and mother, Bobita Begum, who married Murad about six to seven months ago. Following the marriage, Tasin began living with his mother at Murad’s residence.
