Sohag was killed over business dispute, not extortion: DMP

The police have provided new information regarding the murder of a businessman in Old Dhaka, saying that it was not extortion, but a dispute over who would conduct business in the shop.

Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Jasim Uddin made these statements at a press conference organised at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre in Dhaka on Saturday.

The victim, Lal Chand alias Sohag, 39, and the perpetrators of the murder had business together, according to the police. Quoting the initial interrogation of the arrestees, the DC said that there was a dispute over the scrap metal business and who would do business in the shop.

They had been working together for some time. The murder took place as a result of a dispute over business transactions.

Describing the incident, DC Mohammad Jasim said a group of people brutally killed Sohag in front of gate number 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital in the capital at around 6pm on July 9.

On receiving information, police promptly went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, police sent the body to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, on July 10, the elder sister of the victim filed a murder case with the Kotwali Police Station.

The police official also informed that they have collected CCTV footage of the spot and conducted raids in various places in the capital on July 11 and arrested the accused Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, and Tarique Rahman Robin, 22, and seized a foreign pistol from the possession of Robin.

Two more persons named Alamgir, 28, and Monir alias Chhota Monir, 25, were arrested by RAB for their involvement in the incident.

In addition, on Friday night, another accused named Md Titon Gazi, 32, was arrested by Kotwali Police Station.

The DC of Lalbagh Division also said that the police are very active in this incident.

A team has been formed to expose the mystery behind the murder incident and to arrest all the criminals involved, he added.
