Tarique Rahman Robin, a suspect in the brutal killing of a scrap trader Lal Chand alias Sohag outside Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, has given a confessional statement in court in connection with an arms case filed against him by the police.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias recorded Robin’s confessional statement following a request from the investigating officer Md Monir of Kotwali Police Station. Later, the court ordered Robin to be sent to jail.
Earlier, Robin, a senior joint convener of Ward 30 unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was placed on a two-day remand in an arms case filed by police in connection with the incident.
Following the end of the remand period, Robin agreed to give a confessional statement, prompting the investigating officer to request its recording.
In addition, the court also placed another suspect, Titon Gazi, on a five-day remand allowing a petition filed by Inspector Nasir Uddin of Kotwali Police Station seeking a seven-day remand in the murder case.
However, the accused was not represented by a lawyer during the hearing.
Meanwhile, two cases – a murder case and an arms case – were filed with the Kotwali Police Station following the incident.
Earlier in the day, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said the murder case filed over the killing will be transferred to the speedy trial tribunal.
He wrote in a post from his verified Facebook page in the morning, “Five people involved in this incident have already been arrested. Police have started the investigation with utmost priority.”
On July 9, Sohag was brutally killed near Gate No 3 of Mitford Hospital. A video of the killing quickly spread across social media, sparking nationwide outrage.
Sohag’s sister, Manjuara Begum, filed a case with Kotwali Police Station naming 19 individuals and including 15–20 other unidentified suspects.
So far, five suspects were arrested in connection with the brutal murder.
Police arrested Mahmudul Hasan Mohin and Tarique Rahman Robin, while Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two other suspects, Alamgir and Monir.
Titon was arrested during a drive in the Zindabahar area under Kotwali Police Station at around 1am on Saturday.
On July 10, a Dhaka court placed Mohin on a five-day remand in murder case and Robin on a two-day remand in arms case.
In the wake of the killing, the BNP has expelled five members of Juba Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal for their alleged involvement in the incident.
