Singer Momtaz, 2 others shown arrested in fresh cases

A Dhaka court has shown three people, including former lawmaker from Manikganj-2 constituency and singer Momtaz Begum, arrested in cases filed over killings during the mass uprising last year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra passed the orders after hearing on Monday and later sent them back to jail.

The other two people shown arrested are former home secretary Jahangir Alam and former superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman.

According to the court sources, Momtaz was shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of Shaon Mufti with Kotwali Police Station.

Besides, Jahangir was arrested in the Shamim murder case filed with the city’s Dhanmandi Police Station, while Asaduzzaman was shown arrested in Mainuddin killing case file with Jatrabari police station.

Last year, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country after weeks of deadly protests which led to hundreds of deaths.

After her fall, leaders and activists of Awami League were made accused and arrested in murder and attempt murder cases.

On May 12 this year, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Momtaz from the city’s Dhanmondi area and later was placed on a four-day remand the next day in murder case of Md Sagor, who was killed during last year’s mass uprising.
