Actress Shomi Kaiser has been released from Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail after securing bail from the High Court in an attempted murder case linked to last year’s July protest in Dhaka’s Uttara.

She walked out of the prison at 10:40pm on Thursday, confirmed Jahangir Kabir, Additional Inspector General of Prisons, who said the bail was granted in a case filed with Uttara East Police Station.

On August 10, a High Court bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Zavid Hossain granted the bail following a petition, with the news emerging on August 11.

According to case records, on August 4, 2024, Awami League supporters allegedly opened fire during a protest in Uttara’s Azampur area, injuring several people, including Jubair Hasan Yusuf, a student of Tongi Government College.

Jubair later filed a case on August 22, naming 11 individuals and 150 to 200 unidentified suspects, with Shomi Kaiser among the accused.

Police arrested her from her Uttara Sector-4 residence on November 5 last year and later showed her arrested in two attempted murder cases lodged at Uttara East Police Station.

She has also secured bail in another case involving businessman Ishtiaq Mahmud. With no other pending cases against her, she has now been freed, prison authorities said.
