Sheikh Hasina’s PO Mizan on remand

A court on Thursday granted a three-day remand for SM Mizanur Rahman, the personal officer (PO) of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After concluding the hearing in a sabotage case, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra issued the remand order.

Mizan was presented before the court after being shown arrested in the sabotage case involving the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).

The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector of New Market Police Station Ashraful Omar, sought a 10-day remand for interrogation.

Advocate Obaidul Islam, representing Mizanur Rahman, opposed the remand and filed a bail petition.

After the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand. Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of the General Registration Branch at New Market Police Station confirmed the matter.

Police arrested Mizanur Rahman from the capital’s Science Lab area on Wednesday night.

Case details reveal that, during an anti-discrimination student protest, vandalism and arson took place at the BCSIR on July 19 last year. Leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations were involved in the sabotage, causing damage worth Tk4.03 crore.

Following the incident, Sohel Mia, a Dhaka University law student , filed a case at New Market Police Station on November 25.
