Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology organised a unique denim recycling exhibition on 2 August 2025, showcasing innovative garments made from discarded fabric in a bid to promote sustainability in fashion education.

Titled Zero Wastage Denim Exhibition, the event was hosted by the university’s Department of Apparel Manufacturing Management and Technology (AMMT). Students used waste and old denim sourced from the garment industry to create wearable, eco-conscious designs that blend creativity with environmental responsibility.

Chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees and noted artist Professor Mostafizul Haque inaugurated the exhibition, stating, “In the eyes of creative minds, nothing is truly waste. These works show how discarded materials can become high-value fashion.”

The day-long event was held at the Creative The Art Gallery in the Shanto-Mariam Foundation Building in Uttara. It aimed to raise awareness about sustainable design practices and encourage young designers to adopt eco-friendly approaches in their future careers.

Prominent guests included Ruhrose RBT Co-founder Arif Labu, Saudan Clothing Managing Director Tanvir Ahmed, BGMEA-SCICIP Chief Coordinator Munir Chowdhury, Registrar Dr Par Mashiour Rahman, Professor Shishir Kumar Bhattacharjee, Dean of the Design and Technology Faculty Farzana Mita, and Assistant Professor Rajib Das, who supervised the student projects.

A panel discussion followed the exhibition, where speakers discussed the future of sustainable fashion in Bangladesh and the importance of integrating industry trends into academic programmes.

Visitors praised the exhibition for its creative execution and timely message. Many noted that such initiatives could help transform Bangladesh’s fashion sector by encouraging young designers to lead with innovation and environmental awareness.
