Leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) once again blocked Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection on Tuesday afternoon for approximately one and a half hours, demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a JCD leader and student of the Dhaka University.
The blockade began at around 3:30pm and ended at around 5:00pm, causing a complete halt to traffic movement through the key intersection. Many JCD activists gathered at the site and chanted slogans.
At the time of filing this report, traffic has resumed its typical flow in the busy Shahbagh area, with police deployed to avoid escalation amidst the downpour.
JCD leaders and activists were protesting what they claim is negligence in the investigation and to press for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Shammo’s death.
Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research and the literary affairs secretary of the JCD unit at Sir AF Rahman Hall, was fatally stabbed by assailants near the Suhrawardy Udyan late Tuesday night. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A murder case has since been filed with Shahbagh Police Station by the victim’s brother.
Police arrested three persons and claimed they were the killers. However, JCD alleges that the investigation has made little progress and that the authorities are not acting with due urgency to nab the real culprits.
