Sumaiya Jafrin, the wife of army officer Major Sadique, has given a confessional statement in a case filed over secrete meeting of Awami League leaders and activists, whose political activities have been banned by the interim government.
Jafrin testified voluntarily before Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque’s court on Tuesday under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
She was presented in court following the end of a five-day remand, previously granted on August 7 in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Vatara Police Station.
According to police, the confessional statement was recorded after the investigating officer, Inspector Md Zehad Hossain of the Detective Branch (DB) Gulshan Division, requested it upon Jafrin’s consent. The court later ordered her to be sent to jail.
Detectives detained Jafrin from the capital’s Mirpur DOHS area on August 6 and brought to the Minto Road DB office for questioning.
According to the case statement, on July 8 this year, around 300 to 400 people, including leaders and activists of Awami League, BCL and some retired government officials, participated in a secret day-long meeting at KB Convention Centre, adjacent to Bashundhara Residential Area.
The case alleges that the meeting aimed to hatch conspiracies against the government, including a plan to create unrest in the capital by laying siege to the Shahbagh area.
Sub-inspector Jyotirmoy Mondal of Vatara Police Station filed the case on July 13.
Meanwhile, police arrested 22 individuals linked to the AL, BCL and other affiliated groups in this connection.
Earlier, on July 17, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate confirmed that Major Sadique had been taken into military custody from his residence in Dhaka’s Uttara area following the incident. Investigations into the broader network and its activities are ongoing.
