The body of one of the two missing Chittagong University (CU) students who drowned after going out for a swim at Himchhari beach in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday has been recovered. The location of the third and final student’s body continues to evade authorities as search operations continue.
Assistant Director of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defense Tanharul Islam said the body of CU student Asif Ahmed was recovered from the Samiti Para beach area on Wednesday morning, more than 24 hours after he went missing in the sea.
The two were part of a group of three CU students from the Development Studies Department who were initially reported missing from Himchhari Point. The body of one of the students, Sadman Rahman Sabab, was recovered soon afterwards.
Cox’s Bazar Tourist Police Inspector Md Abdul Mukit said, “Upon receiving information about the body washing ashore, our team immediately rushed to the spot. Later, Asif Ahmed’s elder brother identified the body.”
Imtiaz Ahmed, an official from the Sea-Safe Lifeguard Organisation, said Sadman and five friends had come to Cox’s Bazar for a trip after finishing their first-year exams. On Tuesday morning, they visited Himchhari beach.
While two of them stayed on the embankment, the other three entered the sea in order to bathe and swim. Suddenly, strong waves swept them away into deep water.
Sadman’s body was later found washed ashore.
The third student, Aritro Hasan, remains missing. Police, fire service, and lifeguards continue search operations.
