A school employee allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a shirt tied to the iron grill in a police cell at Chakaria Police Station in Cox’s Bazar early on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Durjoy Chowdhury, 25, son of Kamal Chowdhury from Hindupara in Chakaria Municipality. Durjoy was an office assistant at Chakaria Government Pilot High School.
His body was recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital for postmortem.
Police sources said Rabeya Khanam, headteacher of the school, filed a complaint on Thursday night, accusing Durjoy of embezzling Tk283,000.
The headteacher along with several teachers allegedly detained Durjoy at the school and handed him over to police at night.
Police filed a General Diary (GD) and kept Durjoy as a suspect in the lockup after the school authorities directed police to take legal action against him.
CCTV footage showed Durjoy walking inside the holding cell at 1:27am, but by 4:00 AM, police found him hanging.
Md Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Durjoy’s hanging body was recovered from the lockup in the morning.”
