BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has urged the interim government to promptly inform the Election Commission (EC) about the decisions made during the London meeting between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman regarding the national elections scheduled for February 2026.
Speaking at a discussion organized by the Citizens’ Unity at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Salahuddin emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to constitutional processes. He stated, “The interim government must officially communicate the outcomes of the London meeting to the EC, ensuring that the commission can proceed with its preparations for the elections.”
Salahuddin also addressed concerns regarding the interim government’s legitimacy, asserting that while the current administration holds constitutional validity, it cannot serve as a permanent substitute for an elected government. He warned against any attempts to prolong the interim period, stating that such actions would undermine the democratic process and the public’s trust.
The BNP leader reiterated the party’s commitment to a democratic transition and urged all stakeholders to prioritize the nation’s constitutional obligations over political interests. He concluded by expressing hope that the interim government would act swiftly to facilitate the electoral process, ensuring that the upcoming elections reflect the will of the people.
