Students Against Discrimination (SAD) has dissolved all its committees across the country, except for the central committee.
The decision was taken following allegations of extortion and breaches of discipline against the organisation’s leaders and activists in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
The announcement was made by the central committee of SAD at a press conference on Sunday afternoon.
Earlier, a case was filed over an alleged attempt to extort Tk 50 lakh from the residence of former MP from the reserved women’s seat, Shammi Ahmed, in Gulshan. Police arrested five leaders of SAD in connection with the case, catching them red-handed. Among them, four, including the so-called coordinator Riad, were taken on demand for interrogation on Sunday.
Anjuman Ara, duty officer of Gulshan Police Station, confirmed that a case of extortion had been filed on Saturday night against the five arrested individuals. The victim, Siddiq Abu Zafar, filed the case as the complainant.
Those arrested in the case are Ibrahim Hossain Munna, convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan unit of SAD; members Md. Sakadaun and Sadab; Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman alias Riad, senior organiser of SAD’s Dhaka Metropolitan unit and a member of its central sports cell; and Aminul Islam.
On Sunday afternoon, police produced Abdur Razzak bin Sulaiman alias Riad, Md. Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, and Ibrahim Hossain Munna before the court, seeking 10 days’ remand for interrogation. After the hearing, the court granted seven days’ remand for the four accused.
