Abdur Razzak Riad, a leader of the Dhaka Metropolitan unit of Students Against Discrimination (SAD), was arrested in Gulshan, Dhaka, on July 26, 2025, along with four others, on charges of extortion.

The group is accused of attempting to extort Tk 50 lakh from former Awami League lawmaker Shammi Ahmed’s residence. According to reports, the individuals had already collected Tk 10 lakh on July 17, 2025, and returned on July 26 to demand the remaining Tk 40 lakh. As they arrived at the residence to make further demands, police apprehended all five individuals in front of the house.

Following the arrests, SAD expelled three of its members—Md. Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadar, and Md. Ibrahim Hossain Munna—for violating the organization’s code of conduct. SAD officials made it clear that the actions of the expelled members were in direct contradiction to the group’s values, and they instructed all members to sever ties with the individuals involved.

The arrested suspects are currently in police custody, and further legal proceedings are expected in the
coming days.
