Law enforcement officials have recovered cheques worth Tk 2.25 crores from the residence of Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman Riyad, an expelled leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

At a press briefing held Wednesday afternoon at the DMP Media Centre, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the recovery and ongoing investigation.

Police conducted a raid at Riyad’s Nakhalpara home on Monday night, where they discovered four cheques totaling Tk 2.25 crores and documents related to fixed deposits worth nearly Tk 2 lakh.

Earlier, on July 26, Riyad and four others – Kazi Gaurab Apu, Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, Md Ibrahim Hossain, and Aminul Islam – were arrested while allegedly attempting to collect extortion money from the Gulshan residence of Shammi Ahmed, Awami League’s international affairs secretary and a former member of parliament.

That incident led to a formal complaint lodged with Gulshan Police Station by Shammi Ahmed’s husband, Siddiq Abu Zafar.

In another incident, a Riyad-led gang forcibly took cheques of Tk 5 crores from Abul Kalam Azad, ex-AL MP from Rangpur-6.

According to police, Riyad held the position of senior organiser of the Dhaka Metropolitan unit and was a member of the central sports cell of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement prior to his expulsion.
