BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today expressed concerns over the government’s readiness to tackle a potential new wave of Covid-19, as fresh sub-variants spread in neighbouring countries, including India.

Speaking at a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan central office, Rizvi recalled the severe shortages of oxygen, test kits, and medical equipment during the previous outbreak.

“During the last wave, except for a few private hospitals in Dhaka, oxygen supply was critically low,” he said. “If another surge comes, does the government have enough life-saving drugs, injections, and equipment ready? So far, we’ve seen no initiative or assurance from them.”

Rizvi accused the Health Ministry of failing to publicly address its preparedness. “They should clearly inform people whether sufficient medical supplies—oxygen, emergency drugs—are available not just in Dhaka but also in district hospitals,” he said.

The BNP leader warned that without urgent measures, the country could face another crisis if infections rise.
