BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused the interim government of creating confusion regarding the national election schedule and demanded the government declare the exact month for holding national elections.
He criticised the government’s inconsistent statements, such as suggesting elections might be held in December 2025, March 2026, or June 2026, describing this as a “pendulum-like” approach that unsettles the nation.
He said this while speaking at a discussion on 44th death anniversary of President Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club on Sunday.
The BNP leader emphasised the need for a clear and specific election date to reassure the public. He argued that the movement for democracy and free elections was not solely about holding elections but was a response to the lack of free and fair elections under deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration.
He claimed that the ousted government had turned the country into a “blood-soaked Karbala” to maintain power, leading to widespread protests and the formation of the interim government.
He also noted that while the interim government was not directly elected by the people, it had the support of all the parties involved in the movement. Rizvi called on the interim government to provide a definitive election date and initiate the necessary reforms to ensure a free and fair election process.
